wrapping painting

My mini crafter and I pulled out some Christmasy colored paints and set out to make some homemade wrapping paper this afternoon (1.5 year-old style). You can't buy this stuff at Target. I've been taking G to a toddler class on Wednesday mornings and yesterday we had a really great guest speaker (during mommy separation time) talk about the importance of arts at an early age. Of course I soaked it up. She reminded me that there's 1,000 more benefits to letting your child explore different mediums and textures than detriments (uh, messes). Sometimes as adults our idea of "arts & crafts" gets skewed and we fixate on perfect finished products. With kiddos, it's so important to embrace the whole learning process--it nurtures everything from creative thinking to language skills. Whoever knew finger painting could be so in depth?
I just realized that it's been forever since I shared a little G post around here. He's seriously been more fun than ever lately! Just in the last week or two, he's started putting 2 words together. Some of the combos we've been hearing lately are "Ni ni {horse}," "Uh oh bus," and "Super hot." That's right, super hot.

Don't miss out on this week's giveaway extravaganza: ekate jewelry, a custom paper banner, and september house embroidery. Winners tomorrow!!

he's adorable! yep! the arts are important & as education budgets get cut more each year, it's going to be more important that parents & afterschool programs expose our children to the arts...
he looks like he's having a blast!

if there is one thing my current job has taught me, it is the importance of free play and process-based art! matching little craft projects may look sweet on the fridge, all the pieces in the perfect places, but there's something so much more rewarding in giving a child open-ended art project, and seeing where their adorable little minds go! they're so much more imaginative and free with with their creations when they're not bound by our silly need to create a recognizable "project".

i cannot wait to have little hands creating things in my some-day home...but for now it warms my heart to see it happening in yours! :)

the wrapping is so, so sweet. i'd seen elsewhere handstamped ribbons similar to this...anything with that homemade touch gets an A in my book!

on another note, it's so fun to see your home now that i've been there. i think i know exactly where little G is sitting in this photo! :)

anyway. just wrote a book. happy friday!

Precious! And whoever gets presents wrapped in his decorated paper is going to cherish the gift wrap just as much as the gift!

That is something I have had to really work on as a mom...not to worry about the 'mess'. But to realize that he is learning and not just getting everything filthy, but making - in his own way - a masterpiece. ;) Love the pics! ;)
