(how to) make a shmake

what do you do on a friday night when:
you're hangin' in because
you're too cheap to find a babysitter
and it's too cold to go out anyway
and besides, life's way more fun as a threesome?

you make a shmake.

i believe this merits some explanation. you might say we 3 were a little stir-crazy last night...

it's not healthy enough to be a smoothie
nor indulgent enough to be considered a shake

(because truth be told, we have no clue exactly how to make either)

so we raided the fridge and freezer
and created the world's first shmake:

and now to unveil our secret recipe:

in your blender,
throw a handful of ice cubes
a few globs of ice cream
dump in some frozen berries (dole antioxidant blend. mmmm....)
toss in some banana chunks for good measure
thoroughly douse with oj
and add a spoonful of sugar

puree and enjoy.

we circled round on the kitchen floor sitting criss-cross applesauce and watched G go absolutely nuts. don't get between this kid and his shmake.
p.s. could someone please enlighten me...how exactly does one make a true, healthy smoothie? and what about a shake? any education on this subject would be very much appreciated. :)

I started LOVING smoothies several years ago when I tried the Zone diet, and even though I'm no longer sticking to that plan, my love for easy healthy smoothies stayed with me here. Here is my favorite:

Toss the following into a blender:
-1 cup skim milk
-1 cup frozen strawberries (cheaper than fresh)
-1/2 banana or 1 cup of frozen peaches (depending what flavor you want)
-spoonful of yogurt
-handful of ice cubes
-if you want to make it a little more filling you can add a bit of protein powder, but if not, worries at all. It'll still be delicious.

Enjoy your smoothie making! :)

Hi! I'm new to the blog! :) G is a cutie!

I've always made smoothies using equal parts plain yogurt, fruit juice, and frozen fruit. (As long as you use bananas as part of the fruit, it should be sweet enough to avoid adding sugar... berries and whatnot can be kind of tart on their own!). You can add protein powder and other healthy stuff (flaxseed meal maybe?) if you want!

Shmake - love it. T bought me a book on making smoothies and juices last year. Are juices the same as smoothies? Our smoothies always seem to come out really thick though and have to be eaten with a spoon.

Oooh, I just saw your sweet comment on my blog, thanks! To make the label cloud I followed the instructions here - http://phydeaux3.blogspot.com/2006/09/code-for-beta-blogger-label-cloud.html

I have to say- we make something similar all the time - whatever is in our freezer. I usually keep some juice concentrate on hand to add for flavor/sweetness and puree w/ frozen berries and yogurt. When summer is in full swing and we are too hot to eat that is our typical dinner. Aidan had his own special smoothie cup when he was a baby that didn't spill.

They look delicious - never seen those frozen berries here in England - what a great idea.

PS: Your etsy post picture the other week was my inspiration for a post tomorrow (Monday) on my blog if you want to check it out.

Oh - he's just so cute! I think your shmake is healthy enough - as long as it's proper icecream!!

we have a knock-off magic bullet that we bought at target. it is PERFECT for smoothies, and super easy clean-up.

i usually throw in a small serving of whatever flavor yogurt i want, some frozen berries of my choice, and a good splash of OJ. i also throw in some flax seed because that makes it so much healthier. :) EASY!

milkshakes are just ice cream, choc syrup, and a splash of milk. you can do it!

ooh that looks yummy :)

I love reading all the recipes everyone has shared and it seems that we are the only ones who use frozen yoghurt.

this is Morgan's smoothie recipe, because he makes the best smoothies it's perfect for hot summers day:

"apple juice
ice
berry frozen yoghurt or
passionfruit frozen yoghurt
or both
mixed frozen berries
any other fruit that might taste good!
mix it all up!!"

ps. I loved the video in your last post - had me giggling :)

Little G seems to be enjoying his "shmake." But I don't think he's liking it nearly as much as I enjoyed your achoo video!
My granddaughter came in from the other room to see who was having so much fun! So fun...delightful!
Blessings!
